The Reader's Room
Privacy & confidentiality
Notice version 2026-10-v6
Who can read the manuscript
The manuscript opens only for invited readers whose access is active, and for the review administrator. If an invitation is ended, the book stops opening for that person straight away, even on a device that is still signed in.
What we store
- Your email address (to send invitation and sign-in links) and an optional display name. If you were given a reader code instead, we store your name and that code — no email address.
- For reader codes: your PIN only in scrambled form that can't be turned back into the PIN, plus a count of recent wrong attempts so the code can be locked if someone tries to guess it.
- When you signed in and when sign-in links were sent to you.
- Your reading settings, such as text size, line spacing, page colour, and whether the highlighting tools are shown.
- For each section you open: where you left off, and whether you marked it as finished. This is how Continue reading works.
- Any chapter reflections you write.
- If you choose to fill in the final questionnaire: your answers, kept as a private draft while you work on them and then, once you send them, either with your name or anonymously — your choice.
- When you agreed to this notice.
Passwords and sign-in
If you create a password, our authentication service stores a secure password hash rather than your actual password. Neither the author nor the Reading Room administrator can view your password. We also record when you create or last change your password.
PDF requests
If you request a PDF copy of Taking Tuesdays, we store your requested edition, any optional message, the request date, and its status alongside your reader account information. You can view your own requests, and the administrator can review them to decide whether to provide a copy personally. PDF requests do not automatically result in a copy being sent.
Highlights and underlining
If you highlight or underline passages, we store which paragraphs you marked, the exact part of each paragraph, the colour or underline you chose, and when you made or last changed each mark. Your marks don't contain a copy of the book's words. You can turn the highlighting tools off in your reading settings; your saved marks are kept until you remove them.
On your device and behind the scenes
- Your browser keeps you signed in, plus a note of when you last visited, so you don't need a new email link each time. After 30 days without a visit, that device signs you out.
- When a highlight or underline cannot be saved immediately, the Reading Room may temporarily store it on your device and attempt to save it when your connection is restored. Changes that have not finished saving may be lost if your browser's stored data is cleared.
- When anyone signs in with a reader code, we keep a scrambled record of the attempt and of the network address it came from for 24 hours, to stop PIN guessing. It's then deleted.
- The company that hosts this website keeps basic visit statistics (such as pages viewed and type of device) and technical logs needed to run and secure the site.
- The site's typefaces load from Google Fonts, which receives standard web request details.
- There are no advertising or marketing trackers, and your information is never sold.
Who can see your information
You, and the review administrator. The administrator can see the reflections you write, how far you've read, when you last read, and your final questionnaire answers if you send them with your name. Answers you send anonymously are stored without your name, account or date, and are shown to the administrator only in groups of three, so they can't be matched to you — though details you write could still identify you. Your unsent questionnaire draft is visible only to you. Your highlights and underlining are visible only to you. The Reading Room gives the author and the administrator no way to view them, and shows no counts or summaries of them. Other readers can't see any of your notes, highlights, progress or answers.
How it's used
Your responses help Paul Comeaux improve the book before publication. Feedback is always optional.
Keeping and deleting
Your information is kept for the length of the review. You can ask the person who invited you to delete your feedback and account at any time. Anonymous answers aren't linked to you, so they can't be found and deleted later.
When you remove a highlight or underline, its saved position and appearance are deleted. A minimal deletion record may remain to prevent another device from restoring the removed mark. This record is deleted when your account is deleted. If your invitation is ended, your highlights stop showing straight away; if your account is deleted, they are deleted with it.
Our care, and its limits
We've built this site to keep the manuscript and your responses restricted to the people described above. No website can promise perfect security, and anything shown on a screen can be copied, so this privacy depends partly on everyone's good faith.
Confidentiality
The manuscript is an unpublished work shared with you in confidence. Please don't copy, forward, or share it. This is a request made in trust — it is not a legal contract.
